Xavier puts an “X” on early opponents

xavier_65Few teams have had better starts than Xavier.  The Muskateers, fresh off an Elite 8 appearance in last year’s NCAA’s, scrapped their way through Missouri, Virginia Tech and Memphis en route to winning the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico.  XU is now 5-0 with wins over the Big 12, ACC, and Conference USA. This despite losing Drew Lavender, Stanley Burrell, and Josh Duncan to graduation.

Enter Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, and C.J. Anderson, all averaging over 10 points a game through the first five.  Add in talented freshman Terrell Holloway (7.8 ppg), and the defending Atlantic 10 champions have their eyes set squarely on another league crown.  Xavier has done it with toughness and persistence, indicative of coach Sean Miller.

The Muskies still have non-league games with Duke, Butler and Virginia, not to mention rival Cincinnati.  You have to figure XU will be favored in all but one –  Duke being the obvious exception.  Xavier may or may not make a long tournament run, but the Muskies have sent an early notice that reaching the top half of the bracket again is not out of reach, nor is a memorable March.
