First look at 2009-10 Power 24

Time for a little fun.  Hey, it’s way too early, but why not get starting on 2009-10 with our first Power 24.  I’ll update it again after the NBA Draft in June.  Then we’ll know for sure which players are going and which are staying.   At first glance, we see Kansas, Michigan State, Villanova and North Carolina in the top four spots …

2009-10 Power 24

  1. Kansas – Jayhawks should be primed for another run.
  2. Michigan State – Tom Izzo has a lot of weapons returning.
  3. Villanova – Wildcats are the early favorite in the Big East.
  4. North Carolina – Talent runs deep in Chapel Hill.
  5. Texas – The Longhorns should be strong at both ends.
  6. Purdue  – Full ensemble of playmakers return to West Lafayette.
  7. Duke – Not a likely title team, but talented nonetheless.
  8. Tennessee – Anticipate a better defensive team next season.
  9. Oklahoma – Supporting cast is still pretty strong for the Sooners.
  10. Washington – Defense and tenacity make the Huskies our early Pac-10 favorite.
  11. West Virginia – The pieces are in place to move up.
  12. Michigan – Talent and experience returns for the Wolverines.
  13. California – The Bears have perhaps the best (shooting) backcourt in the country.
  14. Clemson – Will the Tigers keep it together into March?  That, not talent, is the question.
  15. Butler – A starting five of freshmen and sophomores last year only makes the Bulldogs a rising force.
  16. Kentucky – We’re banking that Jodie Meeks or Patrick Patterson return.  If both do … they’ll move higher.
  17. Florida – Banking on a hunch here that Billy Donovan gets the Gators back in the mix.
  18. Minnesota – A solid, experience nucleus returns for the Gophers.
  19. Xavier – A lot of offseason turmoil has lowered expectations, but the Muskies should be dangerous.
  20. Louisville – Not a lot of people think highly of the Cards right now.  Says here that Rick Pitino is still coaching some talented players.
  21. Syracuse – The Orange may lose a lot of experience, but enough playmakers remain to keep ‘Cuse on pace for a Power 24 season.
  22. Gonzaga – How will Mark Few assemble the newest pieces?
  23. Oklahoma State – A nice late-season run should fuel the Cowboys.
  24. Dayton – Chris Wright and Marcus Johnson return for the Flyers who could actually be A-10 favorites come November.

Also considered: Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Siena, Illinois, Ohio State, Georgetown, Missouri, Auburn, Tulsa, UCLA, Texas A&M, LSU, Mississippi State, Mississippi, Arizona State, St. Mary’s, Boston College, Wake Forest, San Diego State, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech.
