Preseason Fan Bracket: Field of 68 set

dave1The 10-member Fan Committee has completed its task of selecting 36 at-large teams for the 2015 Preseason Fan Bracket.  The 32 automatic qualifiers were provided at various stages to simulate a “mock” committee process.  As committee members are located a various places, we are using e-mail to complete the nomination and voting components.

First … here are the 32 automatic qualifiers for the Fan Bracket: Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Coastal Carolina, American, Harvard, New Mexico State, UC-Irvine, North Carolina Central, St. Francis, Florida Gulf Coast, Stephen F. Austin, Eastern Washington, Stony Brook, Oral Roberts, Northeastern, Wofford, Iona, UTEP, Cleveland State, Toledo, Georgia State, Murray State, San Diego State, Gonzaga, Wichita State, Connecticut, North Carolina, Kansas, Wisconsin, Villanova, Dayton, Arizona, Kentucky.

Notes: Many of these schools are among the favorites to win automatic bids next March.  As moderator, I threw a couple of curveballs toward the committee members to see how they would handle potential at-large teams.  In one example, Miami-FL reached the “mock” ACC tournament championship game before falling to North Carolina.  This set-up a scenario for the committee in which Miami was not an at-large selection but would have taken a spot with a upset.

The First Four members: New Mexico, Cincinnati, Florida State, Northern Iowa – last four at-large teams IN.

The rest of the at-large field: Duke, Florida, Louisville, Texas, Virginia, VCU, Michigan State, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Syracuse, Ohio State, Michigan, SMU, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Utah, Kansas State, UCLA, Baylor, Stanford, Iowa, Memphis, Minnesota, Colorado, Georgetown, Arkansas, BYU, Illinois, LSU, Xavier, St. John’s, UNLV.

With this task complete, the Fan Committee is now developing the Seed List that will be used to create the bracket.  To assist and save time, I will be putting together seed lines 13-16 and have the committee review.  It’s been an interesting and fun process.  If time permits, I may try another Fan Bracket mid-season.
