Bracketology: New opportunities for Tulsa, UCLA, and Atlantic 10

dave1As the dust settles from Thursday’s bubble carnage, we’re left with two quick takeaways … 1) the final few teams “IN” remained in place, although in a slightly different order; … and 2) at-large opportunities improved for teams like Tulsa and UCLA, along with a couple of teams from the Atlantic 10.

Bracket Update   |   Seed List

Today is a potentially important day for the top of the bracket, too.  Virginia, Duke, Villanova, Wisconsin, and Arizona all take the court in search of a No. 1 seed position on Sunday.  Kentucky is locked in as the No. 1 overall seed, regardless; but spots 2-4 are still undecided.  We have six teams for three spots.

Friday’s Bubble Tracker …

Temple – the Owls take on Memphis; a game they probably need to win.

Purdue – the Boilermakers were helped by Thursday’s bubble cleansing, but beating Penn State would make Sunday that much less interesting.

Richmond – Spiders play VCU, a team they’ve beaten twice.  They need a third “charm” to keep they at-large hopes alive.

LSU – A bit like Purdue, the Tigers were helped yesterday, but losing to Auburn for a second time, and adding a fifth sub-100 loss still wouldn’t be an ideal way to go out.

Indiana – the Hoosiers take on Maryland; which doesn’t really “hurt” them unless it’s a lopsided result.  But if you’re anywhere near the cutline, extra wins help.  One here certainly would.

Tulsa – the Golden Hurricanes won’t benefit much by beating Houston, but a loss would put a major dent in their at-large profile.

Georgia – the Bulldogs are probably okay, given their RPI number(s), but their opponent today is South Carolina; so a loss would be to another non-NCAA team.

Boise State – add the Broncos to a long list of teams helped by Thursday’s outcomes, but a loss to Wyoming could move them closer to the cutline.

Colorado State – the Rams continue to benefit from a solid RPI, and avoiding an upset yesterday probably makes them okay.  Losing to San Diego State is nothing like adding a bad loss, but it also means nothing is “locked” up.

Enjoy the Madness.
