Bracket Bits: Little Rock, Arlington building resumes
It’s impossible to know how the at-large pool will look on Selection Sunday. We’re too far away. That said, there’s enough parity in college hoops – at least through the first month of the season – to suggest a bubble filled with possibilities.
On cue, take a look at the some of the resumes that mid-majors are building. Let’s start with Arkansas-Little Rock and Texas-Arlington. ALR is unbeaten with five true road wins – including victories at San Diego State and Tulsa. UT-Arlington own road wins at Ohio State, Memphis, and UTEP. Their two losses are an OT result at Texas (which just beat North Carolina) and Louisiana Tech, one of the favorites from Conference USA. Those are results that demonstrate an ability to beat quality opponents away from home. In other words, Little Rock and Arlington are making the most of their opportunities.
Let’s also not forget about Chattanooga and Monmouth. The Mocs have posted road wins at Georgia, Illinois, and Dayton. And one of their two losses was at Iowa State. All Monmouth has done is beat UCLA, Notre Dame, and USC. When you factor in Valparaiso and the possibility of Northern Iowa, Evansville, and Wichita State (now healthy) battling in the Valley, there could be quite a race for the final at-large spots.
Here’s a quick peek at some resume games this week (Mon-Fri):
- Louisiana Tech at Ole Miss
- Monmouth at Georgetown
- VCU at Georgia Tech
- UC-Irvine at Oregon
- South Dakota State at Texas Tech
- Arizona State at UNLV
- Ole Miss at Memphis
Saturday and Sunday bring a depth of great games. If we’ve learned anything, it’s to expect the unexpected.
