Xavier continues to climb Seed List
It’s been quite a start for the Xavier Musketeers. Heading into Tuesday’s game with surprising Wake Forest, XU is 11-0 with victories over Michigan, Alabama, USC, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Auburn. All but the Auburn victory came on neutral courts or away from home. For what it’s worth, the Musketeers are currently (as of Dec. 21) ranked No. 1 in the RPI, No. 3 in BPI, and No. 7 at KenPom. Where does that land Xavier on our Seed List update? Solidly at No. 6 – which would make them a 2-seed.
The top four slots are as follows (in order): Michigan State, Kansas, Maryland, and Oklahoma. Those four would be No. 1 seeds if we were updating the bracket today. Other notable climbers include Louisville, Providence, Arizona, Miami-FL, and Butler. Those five schools round out spots 8-12.
Notable teams sliding in our latest update: Iowa State, Kentucky, Duke, and Purdue (albeit slightly). Then there is Georgetown. Since winning five straight – including a win over Syracuse – the Hoyas have dropped back-to-back home games to Monmouth and UNC-Asheville. While Monmouth has been very good, Georgetown also dropped a season-opening home game to Radford. It’s certainly too early to write off a talented Hoyas squad, but as of today, the Hoyas would be among the teams outside the Field of 68.
On the flip side, let’s give continued props to Monmouth. The Hawks have put together a solid at-large profile. If they continue to play well during their conference campaign (MAAC), here’s hoping the Committee rewards them in March with an at-large bid (if needed).
Let’s also not forget about the solid mid-major resumes of Arkansas Little Rock, UT-Arlington, Chattanooga, and Valparaiso. And it’s hard to ignore Northern Iowa’s wins over North Carolina and Iowa State. Both are chalk full of staying power.
