Bracket Games: One tough slate for Long Beach State
When March rolls around and we’re talking about such things as non-conference strength of schedule (NC SOS), think about Long Beach State. When some yet-to-be-determined team tries to explain away its home-heavy non-conference slate filled with cupcakes, think about Long Beach State. When some … okay, you get the idea.
Consider what the 49ers have to navigate in November and December:
- LBSU will play 10 road games – including such teams as North Carolina, Louisville, Wichita State, UCLA, Washington, and Kansas. All six of those are projected NCAA teams in our preseason bracket. Texas is on the list, too.
- LBSU will play at least two neutral site games – including Oregon State.
- LBSU will play only two home games; the first is December 7.
Long Beach State is our pick to win the Big West conference, even though the 49ers could easily be a sub-500 team entering league play. Whether or not they can be in the at-large discussion depends upon how well they navigate all of those early road games. And of course, how well they manage their Big West games – especially avoiding bad losses (ask Monmonth).
This year’s trek isn’t new to LBSU; aggressive scheduling is normal. Kudos to them for taking on another round of monumental challenges. We’ll see how it plays out.
