Seed List: Syracuse has work to do

Dave2015Ahead of another busy weekend in college hoops, this much is clear: Syracuse has work to do.  While the Orange opened the season ranked in the Top 25, they have done little on the court to prove they are a top flight team.  In fact, as of this morning, ‘Cuse would miss a projected NCAA Tournament bracket. South Carolina (neutral) and Wisconsin (road) are acceptable losses, although the Orange were not overly competitive in either.  Add in this week’s somewhat stunning loss at the Garden to struggling Connecticut, and it’s time to re-think where the Orange are at this point.

Seed List Update

Against a non-conference schedule ranked about 200, Syracuse is 5-3.  The team’s best win is Monmouth at home.  They’ve beaten only one other Top 200 RPI team as of this posting.  The good news is this: Syracuse has a favorable home schedule through early January.

Quick Takes / Weekend Preview:

  • It’s a big weekend for the Big East: Villanova (vs. Notre Dame), Butler (Cincinnati), Marquette (Wisconsin), and Xavier (Utah) all have notable games against quality opponents.
  • Our questions about Ohio State were on full display in the past week couple of weeks.  OSU looked good in taking Virginia to the wire in Charlottesville. They looked equally bad while losing to Florida Atlantic at home. Today, the Buckeyes host Connecticut.
  • Michigan has had its ups and downs, too.  Coming off a win over middling Texas, the Wolverines head to UCLA.  Will there be a post-UK hangover at Pauley?
  • Rhode Island could use a nice road win at Houston.  Talented as they are, the Rams have been a bit meh thus far.
  • What can we say about VCU?  Maybe it’s a Ram thing.  Regardless, today’s trip to Old Dominion is a tough way to end a two-game skid (Illinois, Georgia Tech).  VCU’s best wins are St. John’s, LSU, and Princeton.  It’s doubtful those will help much in March.
  • If you like good under-the-radar games … Wichita State vs. Oklahoma, Valparaiso at Missouri State, Colorado at BYU, and Massachusetts at Providence.

Enjoy your hoops!
