Quick Takes: Golden road win for Gophers

Dave2015Winning away from home has always mattered to the Selection Committee. True road wins?  Those are like pure gold, especially outside the conference.  That’s why Minnesota’s victory at Providence on Monday will resonate throughout the season.  The Golden Gophers dominated the paint -and the second half.  Expect both teams to be threats in March.  It was an NCAA-level game.

Other Quick Takes from Monday:

  • Nevada posted a quality win over Rhode Island in Reno.  The Rams are favored to win the Atlantic 10; the Wolfpack the Mountain West.  Good get for Nevada.
  • As for the A10 overall, it’s been a sluggish start. Since the season opened last Friday, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, and Saint Joseph’s have all absorbed losses.  In particular, St. Bonaventure lost to Niagara and Saint Joe’s fell at Toledo.
  • Back to the Mountain West, Wyoming upended Oregon State.  While not eye-opening, it’s the type of win that could help conference perceptions down the road.
  • Belmont bounced back from an opening loss at Washington to beat cross-town rival Vanderbilt.  The Bruins and Murray State are early frontrunners in the Ohio Valley.
  • Wichita State demolished the College of Charleston.  The margin says more about the talented Shockers than the Cougars, who are favored to win the Colonial.

Tonight (Tuesday) all eyes descend upon Chicago for the Champions Classic.  What’s not to like about Duke-Michigan State and Kansas-Kentucky?  Beyond those matchups, keep any eye on Purdue at Marquette and San Diego State at Arizona State.
