Quick Takes: X marks its spot on the road

Dave2015Add Xavier to the list of teams posting quality road wins in Week 1.  The Musketeers arrived at the Kohl Center Thursday as part of the Gavitt Games and exited with a victory over Wisconsin.  While this might not (yet) be one of the Badgers best teams, winning in Madison is always worth noting.  Trevon Bluiett made big plays at key times in the final minutes as X marked its spot. Looking ahead: think about this year’s Crosstown Shooting against Cincinnati. Should be fun.

Other Quick Takes from Thursday:

  • How about Belmont?  After dropping a close game at Washington to open the season, the Bruins beat Vanderbilt at home and then notched a victory on the road at Middle Tennessee State on Thursday.  Good stuff.
  • Same from Saint Louis.  The Billikens are worth watching after beating Virginia Tech in New York (corrected).  Michigan State transfer Jevon Bess had 22 for SLU.
  • Utah beat Missouri at home.  The Tigers were without Michael Porter, Jr., something to file away for down the road when looking back at “wins.”
  • Auburn ran past an Indiana State team that throttled IU last Friday.  Given the uncertainty surrounding the Tigers’ program, I think we’re all still taking a bit of a wait-and-see approach with Auburn.
  • St. John’s took care of business at home against Nebraska.  It was a game the Johnnies should have won and they did.
  • On Wednesday, BYU added a better-than-you-think road win to its resume, winning at Princeton.
  • Creighton continued its impressive start by tallying a road victory at Northwestern. The Bluejays have been better than expected in the early going.
  • Maryland took out Butler.  No surprise, but a solid outcome nonetheless.  Consistent scoring could be an issue for the Bulldogs.

More daytime hoops on Friday.  Next week the challenges and early tournaments continue.  It’s a good time to be a college hoops fans.  Seed List update coming on Saturday.
