Quick Takes: Baylor back at it again

Dave2015One of these preseasons, I’ll learn.  Maybe.  Despite losses and questions, the Baylor Bears will make a favorable early impression and climb the Seed List.  Count on it.  I just need to leave my notes where I can find them next October.  Exhibit A: This year’s den of bear cubs, which started at No. 28 (final 7 seed) on our preseason list, vaulted up to No. 20 this morning (update not posted; Thanksgiving edition planned) after a rather fine trip to Kansas City.  The Bears head back to Waco with wins over Wisconsin and Creighton. Pretty good stuff, I’d say.  Next up? A couple of teams you may have heard of – Xavier and Wichita State.  If Baylor ends up 7-0 after those two (adding in the wins they just garnered), the Bears will have one of the best early resumes in the country.   Even a 1-1 finish puts them in great standing as December arrives.

Other Quick Takes of mention for today:

  • Iowa is moving quickly in the other direction.  A day after losing to Louisiana, the Hawkeyes fell to South Dakota State in the Cayman Islands.  I was higher than most on the Hawks this preseason, and its a bit too early to make definitive judgements, but if anyone needs a bounce-back win today (vs. UAB), its Iowa.
  • Wisconsin has lost three straight, but the Badger’s situations feels totally different.  They’ve been competitive against three ranked teams – Xavier, Baylor, and UCLA.  I still think Wisconsin will be fine; they look the part.
  • Sadly, it appears that Michael Porter, Jr. – Missouri’s standout freshman – will miss the entire season following back surgery.  Hope he heals completely.  How will Missouri respond?  We don’t have an answer, obviously.  But the SEC is considerably deeper (and stronger) than recent years, meaning Mizzou has a tough road ahead.
  • Wichita State has looked good in stretches, blah in others.  Tonight’s Maui finale with Notre Dame should be fun, regardless.  Just keep in mind, the Shockers aren’t at full strength right now.
  • UT-Arlington nearly pulled off another incredible road win.  The Mavericks fell a point shy at Alabama.  They already have a win at BYU.
  • Lots of good matchups in the Bahamas.  Check out Bracket Games for what to watch.
  • And on Thanksgiving Day, we get the start of the PK-80 event in Portland; 16-teams, two brackets, lots of big names.  All in all, a fun way to spend some of your holiday weekend.

Enjoy more of Feast Week!  I’ll be up early with the turkey on Thanksgiving, so if all goes well, expect a Turkey Day update to the Seed List.
