Quick Takes: Boise State on the move

Dave2015If you missed it late Friday night, Boise State arrived in Eugene, Oregon and left with a road victory over the Ducks.  Jot that down in your notebook.  A road win against a power conference opponent has staying power.  It also helps the Mountain West Conference as a whole.  With the Big Ten flailing, a couple of additional bracket slots could be open in March.  Thus, if teams like Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State, and Boise State build worthy profiles – especially outside the league – they can be in contention for those at-large positions.

MWC opportunities continue to knock, too.  Before league play begins …

UNLV gets Arizona and Illinois …. Nevada gets cracks at Texas Tech and TCU (and already has a win over Rhode Island) … San Diego State gets Gonzaga (already has a win over Georgia) … and Boise still travels to SMU.

Other Quick Takes from Friday:

  • Northwestern scraped by Illinois at home in overtime.  Neither team looks tournament worthy right now.
  • Purdue continued its bounce-back from Atlantis by winning at Maryland.  That’s a good get for the Boilermakers who beat Louisville earlier in the week.  It’s also the second true road win for Purdue (at Marquette, earlier).
  • In the HLA (Horrible Loss Alert) category, Georgia Tech dropped a home game to Grambling.  Not sure there’s an appropriate emoji that that.  Gulp.
  • Gonzaga is just fine.  The Bulldogs controlled the second half and ran away from a good Creighton team at The Kennel.   Boise (Idaho) is again looking like an early landing spot for the ‘Zags in the NCAA tournament.  As is another high seed.
  • Davidson played well against North Carolina, but it was too much Tar Heels. Rhode Island needs a contender to emerge in the Atlantic 10.  Will it be Davidson? VCU? St. Bonaventure?

Busy day of bracket games on Saturday.  None bigger than Cincinnati at Xavier.  First real test for the Bearcats.  Enjoy your hoops weekend!
