Bracketology: Purdue makes claim for No. 1 Seed

Dave2015Purdue has won 12 straight, staking its claim as an early No. 1 seed contender.  The Boilermakers left the Bahamas with a victory over Arizona and haven’t loss since.  In all, they’ve compiled a 6-2 record against the NCAA’s updated “Group 1,” the highest win total of any team against that metric.  For their efforts, Purdue sits atop the Midwest Region heading into another busy weekend.

    What is group 1 mean?

Wayne, Good question! This year, the NCAA redefined how it groups teams on its team sheets. In the past, teams were grouped solely by RPI, such as Top 50, 51-100, etc. So people referenced Top 50 or Top 100 wins a lot. Now, there are 4 Groups. Group 1 includes Home opponents ranked 1-30, Neutral court opponents ranked 1-50, and Road opponents ranked 1-75; recognizing more value for neutral and road games and victories. Thus, a team could be a Group 1 win on the road, but not necessarily at home if that makes sense (if a team were say RPI No. 70). Hope that helps clarify a little.

Thanks Dave! That answer helps a lot in explaining what Group 1 means. Keep up the good work. I have been reading this site for many years now.

What is wrong with my Red Storm? Lovett is good but his loss seemed like it just gut punched the team. They can’t score

I’m not a basketball coach, but the team is certainly struggling. Getting back into the race is going to be tough at this point; top of the league is pretty good.
