Quick Takes: Hello, Michigan – and – B10

Dave2015Hello, Michigan.  Feeling a bit of revenge, perhaps?  Just a tad?

Whether last year’s NCAA Championship game was on their mind or not, the Wolverines put a beat-down on Villanova Wednesday night.  On the road, no less.  It was a mere 44-17 at the half.  Duke’s 34-point win over Kentucky still resonates, obviously, but the Wolverine’s result ranks pretty high on the early-season stunner meter.

The question now … how do both teams respond?

Other Quick Takes …

  • Indiana dumped Marquette with ease in Bloomington, led by super-frosh Romeo Langford’s 22 points.
  • Wisconsin picked up a nice roadie at Xavier.  The Badgers exacted their own revenge for a loss during last year’s tourney.
  • Thus far, the Gavitt Games have a distinct Big Ten flavor – adding in Nebraska’s win over Seton Hall.  The Big East’s bright spot has been Georgetown’s victory at Illinois, who were playing without Trent Frazier, the team’s leading returning scorer and floor leader.
  • Notre Dame lost at home to Radford.
  • Moving on …
  • The Missouri Valley is taking some early body blows.  Illinois State lost at Belmont and then trailed Chicago State late before escaping with a four-point win.
  • Speaking of taking some hits, let’s not forget about the American … UCF dropped a home game to Florida Atlantic; this after Cincinnati fell to Ohio State at home during opening week.
  • Then again, maybe Memphis is a year ahead of schedule.  The Tennessee Tigers gave the Baton Rouge Tigers all they wanted before succumbing late to a talented LSU squad on the road.
  • Buffalo picked up another quality road win by taking down Southern Illinois in Carbondale. It’s too early to get too excited, obviously, but the Bulls are worth watching as a potential at-large team from the MAC.
  • Washington survived a pesky San Diego team.  As noted in this week’s UTR games, keep an eye on the Toreros in the WCC race – behind Gonzaga.  The wobbly start continues for the Huskies – and the Pac-12 in general.  USC fell at home to Vanderbilt.  Utah lost at Minnesota.  Oregon and UCLA have yet to be tested.

We get daytime basketball on Thursday and Friday as early-season tourneys ramp up.  It’s going to be a good week or so in college hoops. Enjoy.
