Quick Takes: Gophers Golden at Kohl Center

Dave2015Minnesota was golden Thursday night at Wisconsin, walking away from the Kohl Center with a “Golden” victory over the Badgers.  Somewhat overlooked because of a Big 10/ACC Challenge loss at Boston College, the Gophers’ resume includes early conference wins over Wisconsin and Nebraska.  Outside the league, the victory column adds Washington, Oklahoma State, Texas AM, and Utah.  None of those are as big as Thursday’s win, but still present a solid non-conference profile.  Minnesota welcomes Maryland and Rutgers to The Barn next week.  Holding serve would allow the Gophers to open 4-1 in league play.

More Quick Takes from Thursday …

  • NC State also posted a league road win – coming back to beat Miami.  The Wolfpack’s biggest issue is a non-conference SOS around 340 – yuck.  We’ll know a lot more about State a month from now following a tough end-of-the-month stretch in the ACC.
  • Arizona State lost at home to Utah, after losing at home to Princeton.  Asking whether the Pac-12 will end up with more than one or two bids is becoming a realistic question.  Overall, the Sun Devils have lost three of four with a victory over Kansas sandwiched in-between – go figure.
  • We had mild upsets in Conference USA and the Ohio Valley.  Old Dominion lost at home to Marshall and Belmont lost at home to Jacksonville State.
  • Purdue looked like an NCAA team while beating Iowa at Mackey Arena.  Then again, “home” might be the operative consideration.  The Boilermakers are 0-3 on the road and their best win away from Mackey is a neutral-court victory over Davidson.
  • Iowa’s road woes continued in that game. The Hawkeyes have been non-competitive in their first two true road games (Michigan State, Purdue).
  • League favorites South Dakota State (at Purdue-Fort Wayne) and North Kentucky (at Oakland) dropped roadies in The Summit and Horizon.
