Quick Takes: Resume hits for Washington, ASU

Dave2015February exited with a defiant thud for Pac-12 members Washington and Arizona State.  Hopefully, March will be kinder.

While not a decisive blow on its own, the Huskies absorbed a didn’t-see-it-coming upper cut to their resume by falling at California, the Bears first Pac-12 win of the season.  Cal entered with a 5-22 record and a NET Rating of 275.  The make-up exam comes Sunday when the Huskies lace-em up against Stanford.  We’ll see how quickly UW can erase the Cal debacle from its memory.

Meanwhile, Arizona State absorbed a 28-point loss at Oregon.  Already on the bubble, the Sun Devils’ play two more on the road to close their regular season: Oregon State and Arizona. Nervous times in Tempe. And throughout the Pac-12.

Additional Quick Takes …

  • Xavier won its fifth straight to re-emerge as an at-large candidate from the Big East, beating St. John’s in New York.  XU closes next week with a bubbly trip to Butler before hosting the Red Storm.
  • As for St. John’s, who knows?  The Red Storm remain an enigma.
  • Minnesota got a must-win at Northwestern. Now, can the Gophers snag another resume builder against either Purdue or Maryland ahead of the B10 tourney?
  • Another good night for the Southern Conference – Wofford, Furman, and UNC-Greensboro all posted wins (and thus avoided upsets).
  • Saint Mary’s handled Portland, setting up a potentially needle-moving opportunity against Gonzaga on Saturday. The Gaels lost by 48 at The Kennel earlier this season. Given SMC’s NET Rating, the Gaels will get a look, most likely, but the win column is light for a mid-major with 10 losses; the best ones are New Mexico State and San Francisco.  Beat the Zags and we’ll go from there.
