Quick Takes: Virginia Tech fills its plate with Spartan stuffing

Dave2015Collectively, the college basketball world wasn’t expecting too much from Virginia Tech this season.

That narrative may have changed Monday afternoon in Maui.

Tenacious on both ends of the court, the Hokies filled their plate with some Spartan stuffing en route to a huge resume-boosting victory over Michigan State.

In many ways, the Hokies resembled the previous team coached by Mike Young.  Yes, that would be Wofford, whom Young guided to the NCAA tournament five times in his final 10 years at the school.  It’s one game, so let’s not push all of our chips in just yet.  But it’s a huge start that gives Young and the Hokies a nice stack of cache to play with.

Additional Quick Takes …

  • Dayton cooked Georgia to open the Maui invite. Obi Toppin is the real deal, putting up 25 for the Flyers.
  • Stanford moved to 7-0 with a convincing victory over formerly unbeaten Oklahoma.  The Pac-12 has made an impressive early showing.  The Cardinal meet Butler tonight in Kansas City.
  • Speaking of Butler, the Bulldogs ran to an early lead against Missouri and outflanked the Tigers.  It was BU’s first game – and victory – away from Hinkle Fieldhouse.
  • Richmond is 5-0 after beating Wisconsin in Brooklyn.  Beating Auburn tonight would really raise some eyebrows.
  • Still not sure what to make of Wisconsin; the Badgers opened with an OT loss to Saint Mary’s and then beat Marquette at home before falling to Richmond.  Early returns suggest a bubbly season in Madison.
  • Cincinnati raises question marks, too.  A day after falling to Bowling Green, the Bearcats needed overtime to outlast Valparaiso.  Their other game at the Paradise Jam?  A one-point victory over Illinois State.
  • Not sure what it means long term, but Pittsburgh now has non-conference wins over Florida State and Kansas State.  If not that for that home loss to Nicholls ….
  • BYU beat UCLA to set up a date with Kansas today in Maui.  The Cougars have a win at Houston; a win over the Jayhawks would mean monumentally more.
  • Arkansas remained unbeaten with a last-second win over Georgia Tech.  That noted, we may not know too much about the Razorbacks until the end of December.  By then they will have completed road trips to Western Kentucky and Indiana.
  • IU is 6-0 after taking down Louisiana Tech.  It’s a great start.  It’s also a bit of wait and see with the Hoosiers who have yet to leave Assembly Hall and don’t travel outside the state until their Big Ten opener at Wisconsin on December 7.
  • And in the ya never know category, Bowling Green followed up its win over Cincinnati by losing by 15 to Nevada.  It hasn’t been a good first month for mid-majors hoping to find some at-large magic on Selection Sunday.
