Quick Takes: Michigan makes case for No. 1 seed on Monday

Dave2015Anyway you slice it, Michigan has made its case for a No. 1 seed when the first in-season bracket arrives on Monday.  The Wolverines exited the Battle 4 Atlantis with back-to-back wins over North Carolina and Gonzaga.  They also own November wins over Creighton and Iowa State.  That’s a pretty strong quadrant of victories.

Past performances are never an indication of future performance, of course, but Juwan Howard’s crew is worthy of distinction.  If Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky or Kansas had the same collection of wins we’d be gushing over such a strong start.  For what it’s worth, Michigan visits Louisville for the Big-ACC challenge this week.  It’s a game that could overshadow Duke-Michigan State and even Ohio State-UNC. Who thought that three weeks ago?

Additional Quick Takes …

  • DePaul is now 7-0 after winning at Minnesota; it’s the third true road win for the Blue Demons.  And that earlier victory at Iowa is looking even better after the Hawkeyes crumbled Texas Tech in Las Vegas.
  • As for Texas Tech, the Red Raiders dropped a pair of games in Vegas, meaning their best victory to date is … probably Long Island.  Chris Beard will regroup his troops, most likely, but their current resume is unexpected.
  • San Diego State continues to impress.  The Aztecs are right there with Utah State in the Mountain West, and right now have a superior resume.
  • Oklahoma State keeps climbing, too. The Cowboys dominated the NIT Season Tip-Off Games in Brooklyn.
  • Saint Mary’s got a huge home win over Utah State. The Gaels are trying to clean up the stench of their shocking home loss to Winthrop.
  • Iowa State is probably better than its record because of a brutal schedule.  And it doesn’t get any easier right away as the Cyclones get to play Seton Hall for a second straight time.
