Quick Takes: Illini earn huge road win; LSU keeps tumbling

Dave2015Towing a hefty four-game losing streak, Illinois re-tuned its engine, welcomed back Ayo Dosunmu and exited Happy Valley with a smile.  It was a huge road win for the Illini.  It could also be season-defining.

Illinois was 15-9 (D1 record) heading into its matchup with Penn State, without anything to showcase from its non-conference campaign.  A fifth straight loss would have increased the pressure on a young team still learning how to win.  The Illini’s work isn’t done, but a weight has been lifted.  They close with three of five at home.  We’ll see if they can seal the deal.

Meanwhile, LSU keeps tumbling.  The Tigers lost for the fourth time in five games, dropping a home game to Kentucky.  Once 8-0 in the SEC, the Tigers have gone from a near-lock to make the NCAA tournament to a team that still has work to do.  Up next, trips to South Carolina and Florida.  Drop those two, and instead of tumbling, LSU could be in free-fall.

Additional Quick Takes …

  • Baylor beat Oklahoma to move to 12-0 in the Big 12 and 24-1 overall.  The Bears are well on their way to locking up a No. 1 seed before the B12 tourney even begins.
  • As for the Sooners, they still have work to do to solidify an NCAA berth.  There’s no shame in losing back-to-back games to Kansas and Baylor, but at 16-10 with a 2-7 road record, OU needs a solid close.
  • Creighton keeps rolling, taking down Marquette in Milwaukee. The Bluejays currently have five wins against the Top Tier of Quadrant 1.
  • Dayton took down VCU on the road, effectively ending the Rams’ at-large hopes without a major run to close the season, including the A10 tourney.
  • Florida protected its home court against Arkansas.  The Gators next two are a trip to Kentucky and a home date with staggering LSU. They also get UK at home to close the regular season.
  • Unless Arkansas gets a productive Isaiah Joe back, it’s hard to see the Razorbacks earning a bid. The Hogs have lost five straight and have limited “up” games left.
  • Wisconsin held on against Purdue at the Kohl Center, a third straight W for the Badgers.
  • With the loss, Purdue drops to 14-13 overall.  If there’s good news, the Boilers close with three of four at home, beginning with Michigan on Saturday.  They likely need all three; that would leave them at 17-14 heading into the B10 tourney in Indy.
  • Tennessee survived Vanderbilt. A tough closing stretch will define where the Vols stand heading into the SEC tourney.
