Quick Takes: NC State throttles Duke, ugly nights for UC, ‘Bama

Dave2015Opportunity knocked in Raleigh on Wednesday, and NC State seized the moment by throttling Duke.  The victory helps offset an untimely loss to Boston College on Sunday and keeps the Wolfpack squarely in the at-large conversation with Florida State due in town on Saturday.  Adding a win over the Seminoles would further enhance NCSU’s profile heading into the season’s final two weeks.

If there’s a pause, the BC game serves as a perfect backdrop.  The Wolfpack have proven to be enigmatic, having also been swept by Georgia Tech (and losing to UNC).  As for Duke, the Blue Devils head home to face Virginia Tech.

Additional Quick Takes:

  • Cincinnati flirted with bubble trouble at East Carolina on Sunday.  The Bearcats couldn’t escape this time, falling at home to Central Florida, adding a fourth Quadrant 3 loss to an already bubbly profile.
  • Alabama’s home loss to Texas AM was equally disheartening. Not only does the defeat come with a resume blip, it drops the Tide to 14-12 overall.  Consider it a two-game swing in the wrong direction.  Alabama suddenly has a lot more work to do.
  • Indiana won its Big Ten road game at Minnesota, something the Hoosiers needed.
  • Meanwhile, the loss drops Minnesota to 12-13, effectively eliminating the Gophers from current consideration.
  • Providence knocked off Georgetown in DC, adding another nice win to its resume. The challenge, of course, is overcoming an overall 15-12 record marred by a 7-6 non-conference showing that included losses to Charleston, Penn, Northwestern and Long Beach State.
  • Michigan did the seemingly impossible – beating Rutgers at The RAC.
  • We’ll see how the Scarlet Knights respond.  Rutgers is 1-8 in games played away from home and finishes with three of four on the road (Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue).  Their home game in the final stretch? Maryland.
  • Louisville found its offense and trounced Syracuse at The Yum!
  • Seton Hall edged Butler on a late tip-in with 0.6 left on the clock.  Nothing comes easy in the Big East. SHU hosts St. John’s next, then ends with Marquette, Villanova and Creighton.
  • East Tennessee State beat Furman to reclaim top billing (alone) in the Southern Conference. We’ll see what the NET ratings say today, but as of this writing, it was ETSU’s fourth win against the NET Top 75, including a road win at LSU.
  • We should mention UNC-Greensboro, too, which has a win at Georgetown. The Spartans still have a Top 100 game left with Furman ahead of the SoCon tourney.
  • Virginia took care of business against Boston College; the Cavaliers have won 6 of 7 games, losing only at Louisville in that stretch.  If UVA avoids a loss at Pittsburgh or Va Tech, home dates with both Duke and Louisville await.
