Bracket Bits: Gonzaga wraps up the West; Wednesday’s Bubble games

Dave2015With its win over Saint Mary’s in the West Coast Conference final, Gonzaga should be expecting another No. 1 Seed in the West Region on Sunday.  The Zags enter the 2020 NCAA tournament at 31-2.  While the Bulldogs’ non-conference schedule wasn’t as robust as usual (overall), metrics love the Zags and the Committee had them as a projected top seed during their reveal in February.  Between then and now, the Zags only loss was at BYU.

Five additional teams joined The Field: Northern Kentucky (Horizon), Yale (Ivy), North Dakota State (Summit), Robert Morris (NEC), Hofstra (Colonial).

Wednesday’s Notable Bubble Games:

NC State (vs. Pittsburgh) – The Wolfpack open up ACC tournament play against the Panthers in what appears to be a must-win game.  NCSU can ill afford a ninth loss to a non-tournament team.

Indiana (vs. Nebraska) – While the Hoosiers currently have a slight cushion, a bad loss to the Huskers could bring the cutline a bit too close, especially if the bubble squeezes and/or IU gets passed by several teams around it on the seed list.

Xavier (vs. DePaul) – The Musketeers might be able to survive a loss to DePaul, but it’s certainly risky.  XU is 1-8 vs. the Top Tier of Quad 1 and just 3-11 vs. Q1 overall, leaving the Muskies with a shortage of wins against NCAA-level teams.

Stanford (vs. California) – The Cardinal enter the day at 7-10 vs. Quads 1/2 with an earlier loss to Cal.  A second loss to the Bears would bring another Q3 loss into play against three wins over The Field.
