NCAA Tourney Quick Takes: Double Digit Day 2

Dave2015So much for the chalk theory on Day 2.  Saturday evening took care of that, with Ohio knocking off defending champ Virginia (2019) and Abilene Christian busting additional brackets by trimming the Texas Longhorns.  We’re now into the Round of 32.  In all, three more double-digit seeds advanced, meaning eight (8) squads seeded 10 or higher are still alive.  Some Quick Takes from Saturday:

(14) Abilene Christian edges (3) Texas
If there’s a statistic that tells the story, it’s this: Texas committed 23 turnovers.  That ugly number contributed to the Wildcats attempting 27 more shots than the Longhorns.

(13) Ohio rallies past (4) Virginia
This result was less surprising given UVA’s COVID-related issues and late arrival in Indy.  Ohio’s Jason Preston put up a double-double, and the Cavaliers’ pace kept the Bobcats in contact.  A late run proved the difference with Ben Vander Plas knocking down a couple of huge three-pointers.

(10) Maryland over (7) Connecticut
Hardly an upset, given who these teams had beaten during the regular season.  The Terrapins were lead by Eric Ayala’s 23, while holding James Bouknight largely in check.  It also helped that UConn made just 5 of 12 free throws (41.7%).

Additional Quick Takes:

  • Gonzaga rolled after a sluggish start; no surprise.
  • LSU’s athleticism and shot-making overpowered more deliberate St. Bonaventure.
  • Colorado dominated Georgetown behind an impressive shooting performance that included 11 first-half treys and 16 for the game. The Hoyas allowed the Buffalos to connect on better than 60 percent of its field goal attempts.
  • Alabama’s depth and playmakers ultimately proved too much for Iona.
  • BYU took a quick exit at the hands of UCLA.  Maybe its one of those years for the Pac-12.  League teams entered without much fanfare, but all five teams made it to the Round of 32.
  • Sadly, we lost VCU due to COVID testing.  It was an unfortunate ending to a solid season for the Rams.

Enjoy your Sunday and Monday of college hoops.  We’ll reach the Sweet 16 soon.
