QuickTakesNew Year’s weekend is a good time to be a college hoops fan. Assuming the following contests are played, here are 10 notable Bracket Games for Saturday and Sunday:

Baylor at Iowa State – Both unbeaten, it’s a headline-grabbing opportunity for the Cyclones, who enter with victories over Xavier, Iowa and Creighton.  Baylor currently resides at No. 1 on the Seed List. Then winner exits with a resume builder, along with a conference-opening victory.

Villanova at Seton Hall – Villanova has played six Quad 1 games (2-4), but two of its losses were rather ugly (Baylor, Creighton).  Will the Wildcats break out of their shooting slump?  The Pirates missed three straight games due to COVID pauses and lost a close one at Providence on Wednesday.  It’s a early standings-setter for both. Dave2015Baylor and Duke top the latest Field of 68 and bracket update at Bracketville. The Bears and Blue Devils are joined on the top line by Arizona and Purdue. Gonzaga and Iowa State are next in line.

Seed List

Conference play will help separate the contenders and pretenders in January.  Right now, the Selection Committee would have some challenging decisions.  So many mediocre profiles, especially from the middle seeds on down.

Take time to enjoy your family and friends during the Holidays.  Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Quick Takes: Alabama falls, Villanova bounces back

QuickTakesDavidson presented Alabama with an unwelcome gift Tuesday night, knocking off the Crimson Tide in Birmingham.  It was one of several surprising results, and it adds another quirky piece to the Tide’s non-conference resume.  Think about this:  Alabama has victories over Gonzaga and Houston.  They also have losses to Davidson and Iona.

Villanova continued its streak of poor three-point shooting, but outscored Xavier 40-21 in the second 20 minutes to rally from a half-time deficit.  While still early, it was an important bounce-back at home for the Wildcats, who had been routed in their two previous games against Baylor and Creighton. QuickTakesLet’s start with Providence.  The Friars better-than-you-think resume now includes a road victory at Connecticut.  Pollsters may not appreciate this team – yet – but Saturday’s victory added to an 11-1 record that includes wins over Texas Tech, Wisconsin and Northwestern, all projected tournament teams in the latest bracket.  Providence’s lone loss: Virginia.   Read more…

Bracketology: Baylor, Arizona top overall seeds

Dave2015Ahead of a busy weekend in college hoops, Baylor and Arizona lead the latest Field of 68.  The other No. 1 seeds this morning: Duke and Purdue.  Unbeaten Iowa State was also considered for the top line, followed by Gonzaga, Kansas and Xavier.  The Musketeers have a better-than-you-think resume.

Seed List

Elsewhere, the latest NET ratings love LSU and USC.  At this point, however, high-end wins are lacking.  Villanova has shot it poorly in its past two games and been soundly beaten by Baylor and Creighton.  As a result, the Wildcats are one of this morning’s most notable Seed List drops.

Not surprisingly, the middle and lower-end of the bracket – along with those along the cutline – is jumbled and the difference between teams in miniscule.  Enjoy your weekend!
