QT: Baylor, Iowa St headline Top 10 weekend tilts

QuickTakesNew Year’s weekend is a good time to be a college hoops fan. Assuming the following contests are played, here are 10 notable Bracket Games for Saturday and Sunday:

Baylor at Iowa State – Both unbeaten, it’s a headline-grabbing opportunity for the Cyclones, who enter with victories over Xavier, Iowa and Creighton.  Baylor currently resides at No. 1 on the Seed List. Then winner exits with a resume builder, along with a conference-opening victory.

Villanova at Seton Hall – Villanova has played six Quad 1 games (2-4), but two of its losses were rather ugly (Baylor, Creighton).  Will the Wildcats break out of their shooting slump?  The Pirates missed three straight games due to COVID pauses and lost a close one at Providence on Wednesday.  It’s a early standings-setter for both.

West Virginia at Texas – An early 2022 Seed List game for the Mountaineers and Longhorns.  WVU has the better resume right now; Texas is more highly regarding in the NET ratings.  The Longhorns’ best win is Stanford, with losses to Gonzaga and Seton Hall.  Their remaining nine wins currently reside in Quad 4.

San Francisco at Saint Mary’s – Winner gets an early boost in the competitive West Coast Conference.  Gonzaga remains the heavy favorite – while the Dons, Gaels and BYU battle for NCAA positioning.

Illinois at Minnesota – Another early-season surprise, Minnesota enters at 10-1, which includes victories at Mississippi State and Michigan, although the latter has since lost some luster.  The Golden Gophers lone loss came to Michigan State at home.  UM doesn’t want to start 0-2 against B10 teams at The Barn.  Since its November hiccups, Illinois has beaten everyone except Arizona – including Iowa in Iowa City.

Duke at Notre Dame – How will the Blue Devils return to work following their own COVID pause?  It’s also worth noting that Notre Dame knocked off Kentucky in South Bend.  Duke is the prohibitive favorite to roll through an otherwise mediocre-looking ACC, but games still have to be won on the court.

Along the Bubble …
Wake Forest at Miami – Wake led for most of the game Wednesday night in Louisville before dropping a four-point decision.  Road games are never easy, but this one feels like it has some added importance given the current landscape of the ACC.

Louisville at Georgia Tech – The up-and-down Cardinals should win. Should being the operative word. While still early, UL has already dropped decisions to Furman and Western Kentucky.  Consider this, too: the Cards’ upcoming ACC slate includes two games with Pittsburgh, along with NC State and Notre Dame at home.  It’s the perfect time to pile up a few W’s.

Providence at DePaul – Are the Blue Demons a contender or pretender?  We’ll get our answer soon enough.  Coming off a 15-day layoff, their rally fell short at Butler.  Providence provides a great bounce-back opportunity at home.

Creighton at Marquette – The Golden Eagles have played one of the most challenging schedules to date. They have also lost three straight and four of five.  Providence arrives in Milwaukee next week.  It’s a huge two-game homestead for Marquette – and begins a stretch of 4 of 5 at home.

Happy New Year!  Stay safe and healthy.
