QT: Making sense of Colorado and Temple

QuickTakesColorado and Temple present two of the more interesting early resumes.  How might the Selection Committee view such variants in performance?  Traditionally, notable victories, especially on the road or on neutral courts, weigh more heavily than outlying losses.  But there are limits to those losses, as Dayton proved last year with its Quad 4 performances.

Colorado – Through five games, the Buffalos own a road win at Tennessee and a rather dominate neutral-court victory over Texas AM.  Those same Buffs lost at Grambling State (likely to end up in Quad 4) and to Massachusetts in the same event as Texas AM.  Quick takes:

  • Plus: Tennessee should end up as a Quad 1 victory on the team sheet.
  • Questions: Texas AM entered the Myrtle Beach invite ranked; the Aggies will undoubtedly leave unranked with a lot of concerns.  We don’t know much about the Minutemen.  They fell at home to Towson before edging the Buffalos and Murray State.
  • Minus: Loss to Grambling State will linger – even with the reminder that road games (anywhere) are never easy.
  • Takeaway: Definition of an early bubble resume.

Temple – Through four games, the Owls own a home victory over Villanova and a neutral-court win over Rutgers.  The other two results are a home losses to Wagner and Vanderbilt, neither of which project as NCAA tournament at-large teams (at least right now). Quick takes:

  • Pluses: While Villanova is 2-2 as of this posting, the Wildcats should again find themselves in the Field of 68.  They gave Michigan State all it wanted Friday night in East Lansing.  Rutgers opened the season as a Big Ten bubble team.
  • Question: Vanderbilt is very much an unknown.  The upper echelon of the SEC is strong, suggesting a middle-of-the-pack finish at best for the Commodores.
  • Minus: There’s little positive from a home loss to Wagner, which will likely end up as a Quad 3/4 blemish.
  • Takeaway: Another bubble-ish profile.  The Owls are improved and will win some games.  Will they win enough to be consistent?  That’s the question.

Over-analyzing early results rarely pays dividends, largely because preseason expectations tend to skew perceptions of results.

Additional Quick Takes:

  • Charleston is generating some early waves.  The Cougars have wins against Richmond, Davidson and Colorado State.  Their only loss is at North Carolina.
  • UNLV beat Dayton and is 4-0.
  • Indiana earned a tough road victory at Xavier.
  • Texas AM is now 2-2 with losses to Colorado and Murray State.  Tough start for the Aggies.
  • Virginia is back.  The Cavaliers looked impressive against Baylor.
  • Illinois has reloaded.  The Illini lost 80 percent of their scoring but rallied to beach UCLA.
  • It’s been a November to forget for Florida State; the Seminoles are 0-4.

Enjoy your weekend of college hoops.  Sunday begins what should be an awesome Feast Week!
