Bracketology: The Results
Now that we have an actual 2023 NCAA tournament bracket, what were the results of the final projection here at Bracketville? Let’s take a peek …
2023 Bracket Projection Results:
- Correctly selected 67 of 68 teams (35 of 36 at-large)
- Missed Nevada (I had Rutgers in the First Four)
- Correctly placed 50 teams on the exact seed line
- Correctly placed another 16 teams within one seed line
- Only team off more than one line was Texas AM (I had them as a 5, Committee a 7)
- Paymon score: 367
Overall, a solid year. There are always a few Committee surprises and a few odd seed decisions. Regardless, we’re set for another great March Madness. In closing, thank you for you continued interest, support and interaction. You continue to make the process and long hours fun and engaging.
Bracketology: Alabama leads final Field of 68
When the NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Committee reveals its 2023 bracket, expect Alabama to be the No. 1 overall seed. Houston, Kansas and Purdue join the Crimson Tide on the top line, with Texas as the No. 5 overall seed.
Final Bracket – 2023 Bracketology
The bubble could go in a variety of directions. Oklahoma State is one of the toughest calls. OSU has the metrics and some quality wins, but at 18-15 overall, inclusion would be unprecedented. Several tough decisions along the 3/4 cutline, along with the cutlines for seed lines 4/5 and 6/7. It will be interesting to see what the committee does.

Bracketology: Bid thieves lurking as Sunday approaches
Several bid thieves are lurking with Selection Sunday approaching. Ohio State and Vanderbilt are active in the Big Ten and SEC tournaments. If Houston or Memphis falls in the American, a bid thief will be in play on Sunday afternoon. Florida Atlantic plays UAB in the title game of Conference USA. If FAU falls, UAB will take someone’s spot.
This morning, Kansas moves to the No. 1 overall seed behind its 17 Quadrant 1 wins. Alabama is second, followed by Houston and Purdue. KU and Alabama could flip back if Texas wins and Alabama wins the SEC.
Pending further review, it looks like six or seven teams for three spots. But as noted above, the cutline could shrink. Thus, Dayton’s participants are far from confirmed. By late tonight, we’ll have a better feel about any potential bid thieves.
Seed List: Bubble battles heat up
Often, things sort themselves out. That process is now well underway, both with the Selection Committee and on the court. Case in point: Wisconsin lost to Ohio State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. It dropped the Badgers to 17-14 overall with a morning NET of 81. That’s a tough spot with a long wait. Oklahoma State is the immediate beneficiary. The Cowboys rolled past rival Oklahoma to keep their hopes alive. The potential problem for OSU is mathematics. It’s rare for teams with 15 losses to earn at-large bids and the Cowboys now sit at 18-14. Visually at least, 19-15 would be a lot more palatable than 18-15, and there is precedent for 19-15 teams (twice). OSU faces Texas today.
Thursday could end up being very decisive. Florida Atlantic takes the court in the C-USA tournament. FAU is likely going to receive a bid regardless, so bubble teams will be rooting for the Owls. Below is a quick peek at some of Thursday’s most critical bubble matchups: Read more…
Bracketology: Let the Bubble race begin
As the NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Committee convenes today to begin its selection and seeding process, a host of bubble teams begin fighting for a few remaining spots in the bracket. It’s a potentially big day for early participants in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 12. To view the latest, visit Bracket Games.
This morning, three teams from the Big Ten are scheduled to arrive in Dayton. While this would not be ideal for the Committee (as it would require two Big10 teams to play head-to-head) it is possible and within the bracketing rules. The Committee would not (at least in theory) adjust the seed list for the sole purpose of accommodating the removal of three teams from one league in the First Four. The good news: the current status is unlikely to remain in place and could look different tomorrow morning.
Alabama, Kansas and Houston should be locked into No. 1 seeds. The final order may not be finalized. It’s Purdue and UCLA with dibs on the final No. 1 slot. Purdue remains in place today, but a slip by the Boilermakers would open the door for the Bruins.
